It may be the most difficult type of crime to solve. According to the Bay County Fire Department, six suspicious fires were started county wide in the last two months. Even more suspected arson cases remain unsolved.
Investigator Lt. Jimmy Talley says there are 27 unsolved arson cases in Panama City. “One of the biggest problems is, it puts fire fighters at risk because they have to go in and risk their life to save lives and property,” Tally said.
One of the more notable suspicious fires happened last December on Beach Drive. A gutted out historic Train Depot burned to the ground under the night sky. The Shay’s Oyster Bar building was also vacant when it went up in flames. Both buildings are owned by the same man, George Kingston. Arson is suspected, but so far, no arrests have been made.
“One of the major causes of arson is usually revenge,” Tally said. “Second cause is monetary. They’re having financial problems and they would set their place on fire to get the insurance money.”
Of 45 fires last year in Panama City, Tally says 25% are suspected arson. With all the evidence to process, it can take weeks, even years to make an arrest.
“We collect samples and send them off to the lab, then we call detectives from the Police Department and crime scene for finger prints and stuff like that. Then we interview witnesses.”
Tally says 70% of the arson cases he’s worked have been solved. Arson is a felony and Tally says those found guilty are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The State Fire Marshall’s Office works all arson cases in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies like the Bay County Sheriff’s Office and the Panama City Police Department. If you have any information on these cases, call 747-5890. Rewards are being offered.
