The Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary call the evening of November 11, 2009, at the Marine Inland Fabricators business located at 1725 Buchanan Street in Southport.

Deputies discovered that two 55 gallon barrels containing scrap copper located outside the building had been stolen.

During the course of the investigation information was developed that lead investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division to Christopher Michael Herring, DOB 8/28/87, of 8034 Riley Road in Southport, and Brian Michael Simpson, DOB 8/28/87, of 1614 3rd Street in Southport.

Investigators believe Herring and Simpson cut the fencing surrounding Marine Inland Fabricators and stole the barrels, selling the scrap copper to a local dealer and sharing the profits. The barrels contained about 200 pounds of scrap copper which sold for about $250.00. One of the barrels and some of the scrap copper was found at Simpson’s residence.

Simpson was charged with Burglary and Dealing in Stolen Property, as he allegedly sold the scrap copper. Herring was charged with Burglary. Both were taken and booked into the Bay County Jail.
