Open heart surgery isn’t just for the elderly. In fact, many children have life saving operations before the age of one. One in 100 new born babies have heart defects and the American Heart Association is stepping in to help.
Saturday, families with children who have congenital heart defects met in Panama City Beach for the American Heart Heroes Regional Family Conference. 30 Families from across Florida and surrounding states came to the Bay Point Marriott for the one day event. Parents picked up tips from pediatricians on dealing with heart disease, while their kids stayed busy with a slew of activities.
“Some of them have multiple open heart surgeries starting from maybe the first or second day of their life,” says Noelle Smith an assistant for the American Heart Heroes Conference.
“Some of them are teens now their mid to late teens and have had 4 or 5 open heart surgeries. People don’t often think of the face of open heart surgeries as a child’s face and it’s so important to raise that awareness that these kids it didn’t have anything to do with their lifestyle choices their diet, exercise or anything like that. They were born with it.”
The American Heart Heroes Regional Family Conference is a statewide event. Last year it was held in Miami. Officials plan to meet next year in central Florida.
