An attempted murder and suicide in Jackson County appears to be over a domestic dispute. One man is dead and his wife in stable condition in the hospital, according to the victim’s sister.
It all happened around 6:30 this morning on Broken Oak Drive in Sneads. The couple got into a fight and now two little boys do not have a father and their mother is recovering in the hospital.
“It’s a tough loss for us right now,” said one family member.
Family of both Robert Earl Cruse and Kenyatta Cruse are shocked by the attempted murder and suicide that happened Monday morning.
‘It’s a shocker to everybody right about now,” said Earl Cruse’s niece, Teangelia Sims.
She got a call around 6:40 a.m. from her uncle, never expecting it would be the last time he would call her. She didn’t answer, but just a few minutes then bad news came.
“I tried to call him but he didn’t answer…when that happened I knew something was wrong because he usually answers his phone,” Sims said.
After an argument, Kenyatta stayed at her parent’s house just a few yards away. According to the victim’s sister, Cruse broke down this door and then chased her down and stabbed and strangled her. He believed she was dead…but she wasn’t. He then took his life on the trail in between the two houses.
The family says the couple who were married for 9 years had the usual marital problems but nothing out of the ordinary.
“From what I’ve seen they were always together always hugging and showing affection they never appeared to the outside that something was going on,” Sims said.
The victim’s mother said Earl went to work last night with his normal routine. He had a lot weighing on his mind as both his brother and father died within the past year.
