Bay County, Fla:
Spring break is just around the corner.
With it come crowds, travelers and traffic.
Officials from Panama City Beach Police and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office met Monday morning. They say keeping the lines of communication open and creating a plan ahead of time are the most important factors for a successful and safe Spring Break.
Saturday, beach drivers ran into problems on Panama City Beach Parkway.
Heavy traffic was due to the Mardi Gras parade at Pier Park. But it’s just a preview of what’s to come; Spring Break.
“We lived on front beach and you can’t get anywhere,” says Dixie Hester.
“The locals know every year that this event is coming so they kind of work around it they shop around it, they travel around it, there’s ways to get around the beach,” says Robert Harding, Panama City Beach Police Chief. “It’ll increase probably four times the number of personnel that are out there.”
Chief Harding says crunch time begins in about a month. During that time they’ll take on extra personnel and extra shifts.
“We’re going to bring in some state troopers, the Beverage Department will bring in some Beverage Agents,” Harding says. “The Sheriff’s Office will be out there also.”
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office plays a big role, although their focus is different than the PCBPD.
“We deal with it as the Spring Breakers are coming in, the influx of traffic and as they are leaving,” says Ricky Ramie, Bay County Sheriff’s Office Field Services Division Commander. “And then we also have the Unincorporated areas of the beaches as well.”
But residents say there are congested areas.
“I think really the problem area is in front of Wal-Mart on Front Beach Road and at the [Hathaway] Bridge.”
“The bridge is what it is,” says Ramie. “Hopefully the new traffic team that’s over at the county will be able to look at those intersections and keep the traffic moving to get them over to the beach safely.”
You are assuming the capability of intelligent thought????
they do this every year, they wait till spring break to do major construction, be it painting the bridge or just road construction. why dont they do all this toward the end of summer or even winter??
If memory serves me right it’s the same one that is doing the destruction of hwy 231. You would think they would have finished the first before starting the second but now they have both in a mess. But I’m sure that His Majesty has a reason for it being this way if nothing else but to prove he can get away with it. I, too, wish they would at least take time to fix that blasted railroad crossing if nothing else gets done until after 231 is finally finished.
Why cause more traffic problems right now with spring break on top of us ...and then complain about the traffic problems….btw what company did the resurfacing in front of the college? I hope they fix the BIG BUMP at the railroad tracks there…wait they must claim to be done with it as no one works on it anymore!
Money, money, money and screw the locals! Give the beach clubs their money!
And to think all the road construction going on that SHOULD have been donr by now…and now right here on top of it all they are closing the intersection of 231 and Transmitter Road.

I agree, the tracks by the college got worse after the construction. Good job PC, can we say “soup sandwich”.
