Tallahassee, Fla:
Tax season is just around the corner and with a troubled economy, the possibility of becoming the victim of a scam is even higher.
Atorney Gneral Bill McCollum is offering advice to protect yourself.
In a statement released by his office, he listed the following:
Never give out personal information to anyone who is soliciting money
Do not respond to emails asking for information relating to refunds. The only website to check on the status of refunds is the official website of the IRS.
Research charities before sending money and ignore emails asking for money.
Do not give money to third parties for income taxes on prizes.
If someone claims to be an IRS agent, always ask for proper identification.
News 13 is on your side with more tax tips. We spoke with H and R Block tax advisor Gary Bellotti who says it’s extremely important for people to take special caution when they fill out their taxes.
“If they’re asking for personal information, account information, they should really know the person they are communicating with before they give that information out.”
