Four Bay District Principal recommendations were presented today, and all four were accepted.
“I’m excited about it because it’s a win, win, win,” Superintendent Bill Husfelt says. “Everybody got what they wanted. All the schools and the staff and the parents and the kids, they were all basically involved directly or indirectly in who they received as principal so that’s the way it should work out.”
Several switches had to be made to keep all positions filled.
“It definitely is the domino effect,” Husfelt says, “And there will continue to be more as more people retire out and different things happen in the district so principals know they aren’t immune to this.”
Bill Husfelt, the new Bay District Superintendent, was previously the principal at Mosley High School. Sandra Harrison will be taking his place there, leaving her previous spot as principal for Deane Bozeman to be filled temporarily by Assistant Principal Peggy Bunch.
Former superintendent James McCalister returns to his old job as principal of Jinks Middle School, moving the previous Jinks Middle School Principal to Principal on Special Assignment of Callaway Elementary for the remainder of November, and Bay High School for the month of December.
The school system also received 5 years of reaccreditation today. Husfelt says he believes the main obstacle in the year to come will be the budget.
“We’re just trying to fix this year’s budget to meet state requirements,” Husfelt says, “And then at the same time planning for next year’s cut of a 10% cut.”
He says with another 3.4% cut coming next month, they’re going to have to make changes.
“I don’t foresee any salary cuts and we’re going to do everything we can do to avoid layoffs, but I would think our structure is going to change over the next year.”
The board has not presented a permanent plan for Deane Bozeman School yet.
Superintendent Husfelt says the main thing he will focus on with budget cuts is changing the way they do business, not changing jobs.
