The Bay District School Board is one step closer to making cyber bullying an expellable offense. The state requested that districts in Florida add the new form of bullying to their board policies, allowing them to punish students for making threats online.
Board Chairwoman Donna Allen says it’s a policy the district needs to have in place.
“I do believe it’s a preventative measure,” Allen says, “So that we don’t have some of the problems that we’ve had in the state. We’re kind of being proactive with this but this did come from the state telling us that you need it, but we haven’t had a large problem with it we’re just being very proactive.”
The board is also advertising a revision to its student search and seizure policy.
The change would require the school to contact a parent or guardian before asking any questions. It would also only allow two officers to be present. The searches and questioning will have to take place in front of a school official of the same gender as the student.
The Board will vote on the cyber bullying and searching policies at its December meeting.

My son was the victim of an imposter profile on MySpace that caused such humiliation in school that he skipped school - and he’s an honor student! Bullying is a very real and serious threat to our children and their education so I’m glad Bay County is adopting a policy to empower schools to properly educate their teachers, parents and children about bullying and provide a system to effectively report and deal with it. I’m also grateful for the bully and predator-free website working in conjunction w/schools - iLAND5.COM. This Network offers educational and fun games and a safe alternative to social networking sites like MySpace that prevents identity theft, bullying and inappropriate content. Debbie Johnston, initiator of “Jeff’s Law”, is an incredible woman who along with SafeWave.org helped us get the profile down - you wouldn’t believe how hard that is! This new law should help that too.
