Local Red Cross Disaster Action Team Volunteers Respond To Help Family of Four

Panama City, FL - Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers responded to a local hospital at approximately 3:30am this morning to assist the Smith family whose Marlin Circle home suffered major damage due to a fire.  The Red Cross is assisting the family with such items as clothes, food and temporary lodging. 

The Central Panhandle Chapter of the American Red Cross is not a government agency and receives no government funding.  Assistance to local disaster victims is made possible by local donations.  If you would like to help local disaster victims you can call 850-763-6587 or log on to our web site at www.redcrosscpc.org.

The following was released Wednesday by the Bay County Sheriff’s Office:

Deputy Pulls Father and Child from Burning Home

Shortly after midnight this morning, January 7, 2009, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a fire in a home at 101 Marlin Circle, Panama City Beach. Upon arrival, Deputy Robbie Claytor found the residence fully involved in flames and the father of a 10 year old girl still in the home trying to rescue his daughter. The father was being overcome by the smoke and, recognizing this, Deputy Claytor entered the bedroom through a window the father had already broken out in his efforts to save his daughter. Deputy Claytor was able to get the father out of the home and then reenter to save the 10 year old girl.

Deputy Claytor carried the girl out of the window to a safe distance from the burning home and began to provide emergency care. This continued until EMS arrived and took the girl and family members to a local medical facility for treatment. The child has been flown to a Birmingham, Alabama facility due to the 3rd degree burns she suffered in the fire. Deputy Claytor also was taken to a local hospital for medical attention for the injuries he sustained in the rescue of two people from the fire. Deputy Claytor suffered from smoke inhalation and cuts from broken glass. He received treatment and has been released.

The Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

Beach Fire Sends 5 to Hospital

Panama City Beach Fire Department responded to a house fire at 101 Marlin Circle shortly after midnight Tuesday night. Responders report that flames were coming through the roof upon arrival.

All four family members were transported to the hospital, two with more serious injuries.

One Bay County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was also transported to the hospital.

Panama City Beach Fire Department Officials say the home seems to be a total loss.
