For the Bay County Commission, it’s a time to reflect on the past and look to the future. One thing is for sure, this group of guys will never be the same.

Girvin Will Not Seek Re-election
A seat goes vacant in Bay County.

After 8 years of service, Commissioner Jerry Girvin announces he will not seek re-election. Girvin plans to serve out his term that ends next November. He feels the time has come to spend more time with family.

However, it may not be the last you see of Jerry Girvin.

“Who knows? I might find some other office that needs some work on it, and run for that. Look out,” said Commissioner Girvin.

Dozier Becomes Chairman
The line-up continues to change as Commissioner Bill Dozier moves one chair over. The commission elected Dozier as it’s new chairman. It’s a move up from his previous role as Vice Chair.

“It brings different challenges, and I just look forward to each of those challenges,” said Commissioner Dozier.

Commissioner George Gainer moves forward as Vice-Chair.

Courthouse Renovations

The challenge to renovate the courthouse is almost over.

The commission approved the last leg of construction to eliminate water infiltration. The windows, roof and doors are almost fully replaced.

“It’s going to work very well for the people of Bay County and it’s going to extend the life of that courthouse for a very long time,” said Commissioner George Gainer.

Election Equipment Changes

Election equipment may be put to pasture.

A new state mandated law requires a ballot paper trail and these recently purchased touch screens don’t fit the bill. But, the county must foot the bill for the new equipment that costs about $450,000.

“It’s not a choice, it’s a requirement,” said Supervisor of Elections, Mark Andersen.

As requested by the Andersen, the commission supports a delay of the changes.
