Bay County, Fla:
The day after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Stores roll out big price cuts, but many are not waiting for November 28.
Stores like Best Buy, Sears and Circuit City are already launching their Black Friday specials early. With the economy in a slump, retailers fear consumer spending could be on the decline. It’s all the more reason they’re rolling out the red sale signs one week early.
Sears Manager Shannon Emerson says the day after Thanksgiving brings in a half million dollars in revenue. “Christmas sales definitely pays the bills the first few months of the next year.” That’s five times more than a busy Saturday and retailers hope to entice shoppers to spend sooner.
“We have the opportunity to get the goods so we might as well roll it out to our customers and give them the benefit of it.”
Retailers are focusing mainly on electronics. Laptops are $150 off while dollar digital cameras are $79. Newly popular digital photo frames are also marked down to only $50.
“Everybody needs to save money,” says shopper Pam Shiver. “Here at Christmas time things are much harder as it is. If they can’t extend the savings they need to try as much as possible if they want the business in their stores.”
One week before “Black Friday,” there’s already discounts in High Def. In Sears it’s a 50 inch Panasonic TV for $1,000. In Best Buy, a 40” Sony LCD is normally $1400. Bundling with a Blue Ray will cost $1300 for both.
“I’ve saved hundreds of dollars on black friday,” Shiver said. “I’m glad to see the businesses are being competitive. I think it’s definitely going to boost the economy.”
