Blountstown, Fla:

Calhoun County Board members hope state cuts won’t interfere with plans for a new high school.

Last year, the Department of Education approved $24.5 million in special facilities funding for a new Blountstown High School.

The school board initially planned to build it behind the current campus, consolidating Blountstown and Altha High Schools.  After much opposition, the district decided to keep Altha open, giving students the choice of which one to attend.

The board is still moving ahead with plans to build a new High School.  Superintendent Tommy McLellan says the board now wants to build it on a property a half mile north of Blountstown city limits.

“What we’re trying not to do is lose that $24.5 million.  We can change the site, you can change the design, but you can’t change the plan.  The plan is to build a high school in Blountstown.”

The special facilities funding still needs to be approved by Florida legislature.  That could happen during the session in March.
