A boating accident throws three people overboard, leaving one dead. It happened around 1:30 pm in Walton County near the Clyde B. Wells Bridge.
“A 16-foot boat which was heading East to West out here on the bay,” said Walton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Mike Gurspan, “at one point the boat hit a pylon.”
The crash sent 12-year-old Angelica Morales, her grandfather 71-year-old William Andrew Moraga, and his friend 74-year-old Harry Laird overboard. While Morales and Laird got out of the water safely, Moraga’s body was recovered around 6:30pm.
“Bad news for the community,” said Ronald Dehoff, who came upon the scene while finding a spot to fish, “and for something like this to happen where everybody comes down to have a good time fishing, it’s sad.”
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, (FWC) Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Okaloosa County Dive Team, and other agencies searched for 4 hours to recover Moraga’s body. Authorities say it showed no visible injuries. They also say he wasn’t wearing a life-jacket.
“Who’s to say if he did have a life-vest on what the situation would be but I would say the probabilities would be a lot greater right now that he would’ve survived,” said Gurspan, “This is another sad example another sad situation where somebody didn’t have a life-vest on and it led to tragedy.”
Authorities hope to determine the cause of Moraga’s death after an autopsy scheduled Tuesday. FWC representatives say they have no reason to believe alcohol was a factor.
