Washington, DC:
Congressman Allen Boyd (D-North Florida) today introduced the Gulf Oyster Protection Act of 2009 in the House of Representatives, legislation that would prohibit the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from using federal funds to implement any regulations that would inhibit oyster harvesting in the Gulf Coast during the months of May to November. Congressman Boyd’s position on the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over funding for the FDA, will allow him to continue his efforts to prevent the FDA from imposing harmful new regulations on Gulf Coast oyster production.
“Through my seat on the House Appropriations Committee, I will be working at every juncture to get more answers and to block the FDA from implementing these harmful regulations,” said Congressman Boyd. “The FDA has provided no justification as to why they would impose this new regulation on shellfish farmers, and little consideration seems to be given to the impact that this would have on the industry and the citizens trying to earn a living. This legislation will protect the livelihood of our Gulf Coast oyster farmers by ensuring they can continue to operate in the same safe, efficient and reliable manner they have been for over a hundred years.”
Last month, Congressman Boyd sent a letter to Dr. Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the FDA, urging the FDA to retract any mandatory actions that would inhibit oyster harvesting in the Gulf during the months of May through November. The proposed reformulated FDA policy would put in place additional controls to prevent Vibrio vulnificus (V.v.) infections by mandating that all oysters harvested in Gulf Coast waters from May to November be subjected to a procedure known as Post Harvest Processing. Currently, only 15 percent of oysters retrieved from Gulf waters undergo this procedure.
The oyster industry has worked with the FDA for years to take voluntary steps to reduce the disease and death from V.v., extremely rare bacteria that affect fewer people than were struck by lightning last year. Since 2001, the incident rate of V.v. has declined 35 percent largely due to voluntary efforts implemented by the oyster industry. According to the FDA’s own analysis, V.v. now affects less than 30 individuals on average and results in fewer than 15 deaths per year, primarily in populations already susceptible to these rare bacteria.
haha retired one, you ought to do stand up, too funny. thanks to your *cough* great president, we will be a third world country, you must be one of those that must just suck from the govt tit all your life? you prob live in govt assisted housing all your life, welfare, wic, prob got you car, if you have one, from the govt? i bet im right. we the people that pay for your way of life are sick and tired of it, we dont want to just send our entire paycheck to the govt and its getting closer everyday.
Boyd voted against the poor and middle class and even turned against his fellow Democrats by voting NO on health care reform? He might as well switch parties and become a Republican, as he does not support what the majority passed in one of the most historic bills in US history that will end up in American anals along with historic passages as The Social Security Act of 1935 and the Medicare Act of 1965.
This historic bill will when passed soon by the Senate and signed into law by our great President, will mean the end of real poverty, forever, in the United States. You will never be in total poverty or in a third world country when all citizens are covered by health care as this is a fact in Europe and in any free country that has health care for all.
Thank God it passed even without Boyd’s vote.
He will surely be voted out and never be remembered as a Democrat but as a turncoat.
Nancy Pelosi, will go down in history as one of the greatest Speakers of the House in US history!
he voted on a version of the bill, the actual bill still hasnt been stamped out yet, just wait, its coming- hes a turncoat. just like the lie about he would come back here before the vote. now he can come back and say he voted against it, then when the real one comes he’ll vote for it, hes a scumbag, but hes your scumbag…. keep sallie in pc
He has already voted against the bill. So how is he going to change his mind? The vote was about a month or so ago, now we’re just waiting to see how the senate votes. He voted against the bill so I’m voting for him. If he came out publicly and supported the bill which would mean he is flipping on Salliemae employees then sure I’d vote against him, but as long as he supports us and is voting against the bill I’m going to vote to re-elect him.
obama is a dummcrat just like boyd, watch boyd change his colors just like when he turned yellow the last time he was here. id almost put money on it, that he will vote against sallie, make sure you check his vote after the offical vote.
I don’t know the history of Congressman Boyd I’ve only been in Bay County for about 4 years so what he done prior to now I don’t know about and I don’t care. It’s not about what you’ve done, it’s about what can you do for me now. Maybe when he ran for office there was a republican in office and he could only run as a democrat, maybe he’s been a democrat since birth, I don’t know and I don’t care. I vote for who I think can help me and my community. Based on his position on the education bill I’m voting for him, you don’t have to, you can vote for osama’s education bill if that turns you on.
this waste of skin throws you a trinket, and your willing to vote him back in? he has done nothing for you all the years hes been in office and all of a sudden since he knows he is in trouble he shows up and “supports” a few things, and sorry to say, simple people buy it, and votes for him. you need to look at the bigger picture. yes i support sallie, but what party is pushing for this legislation? answer- dummycrats, what party is boyd- dummycrat, look for him to say one thing(he supports sallie) and do another( be the puppet hes already been for so long and vote to do away with sallie). you choose.
Oldman richard are you on DRUGS???
I HATE obama with a passion, I wish to GOD he was never born, I’d be the first to dance on his grave. Obama is trying to take my job away and the very last thing I will ever be is an obama worshiper.
The only reason I’m standing up for Congressman Boyd is because he stood up for me and my co-workers and is trying to defeat this education bill. So myself and hundreds of others here in Bay county will still have a job. You may not respect that or think much of that but I do, and that carries a lot of weight with me.
As for you Dan I could care less if your Republican or Democrat, but I thought you supported the workers at Salliemae who are fighting for their jobs. But I guess I was wrong If you supported those people you wouldn’t be trying to vote out of office one of our strongest supporters in Washington DC.
He could be a gator fan for all I care and I’d still vote for him, everyone has flaws, but you have to look at the bigger picture. JOBS!!
protect, you are wrong, i will keep telling people about him till he is out of office. when you elected him did you elect him to serve we the people or his party officals? and did you elect him to only do something for us here in his district, till it election time? as for me, my answer is i want someone in office that reflects my values, doesnt let his party officals pressure him into a vote, and someone that serves this district the entire time he/she is in office. and as far as you guessing my party, you are wrong! again.
protectfloridajobs.com, I don’t care what you think. The last time I looked this WAS (pre-obama) a free country and we had the right to say and think what we wished. After the turn-tail-and-run crap that Boyd pulled rather than face the voters he can walk across the bay dry-footed and I’d still say he’s wasting the breath he breathes. Oh, and by the way you turd, I served over ten years in the military….ALL OF IT during ‘Nam and lost a lot of my buddies just so you could be an obama worshipper. Got it?
Amber, a FSU graduate, I’d expect a little more from you than this. If I’m not mistaken isn’t Congressman Boyd trying to help the oyster industry and the people in this area by stopping restrictions on when they can harvest? Isn’t that a good thing?
And Dan, I thought you were over this hate on Congressman Boyd thing. I know he isn’t a Republican, but it is about more than political parties. I think he is trying to help the people in this area where the oyster revenue is concerned. If they can harvest more months then that’s more revenue right? So how is that a bad thing? He is trying to stop the regulation the FDA is trying to levy. Is there anything he can do right in ya’lls eyes?
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying, as long as he fights for my job he has my vote.
As for oldman richard, I don’t know what to say about you. I just find it hard to believe you could have ever been in the Military.
Hopefully this year there will be someone running against him.
gator@work, you are absolutely right! This yellow-bellied jerk needs to be taught a lesson that he’ll never forget. Tucking your tail between your legs and running away to hide rather than face the people you are supposed to represent just don’t cut it! He’s already proven what he stands for and it’s not us irregardless of the “show” he’s trying to put on now.
wow its soo amazing we dont hear anything from him, till,,,,hummmm,, oh ya, it election time!!! dump this puppet! hes got nancy pelosi and harry reids hand up his a**. he cares more for party that we the people!! kick his sorry butt out!!!!

You are very ignorant about most things. I’ve never had any help from anyone.I just beleive you need to help those less fortunate as it’s the CHRISTIAN thing to do. The Republicans have proven they are un-christian during this debate and only care about themselves and not the poor or needy. They are the party of NO. They have shown they are mostly racists. soon, they will be the party of NO ONE.
A blind man can see how greedy and self centered they now are and are only for Big Business to further rape and rip off American citizens through their greed.
Sorry, but you had it coming.
I’m retired, living the good life through volunterisim and helping the poor.
I just care about the poor. Sad, the Republicans don’t as they have just proved it. Bad Christians they are.
