Tallahassee, Fla:
Governor Charlie Crist says he might consider calling a special session to deal with the state’s budget deficit.
Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, the only Democrat in an executive position in Tallahassee, said last week that Republican leaders were in denial about the state’s economic conditions.
Sink says Florida is facing a potential $1 billion-plus shortfall in this budget year.
Last week, Representative Ray Sansom, the incoming House speaker said he didn’t anticipate the need for a special session.
Sink has suggested that the Republicans reluctance to call a special session has to do with their concern that doing so would reinforce further paint a negative image of the state’s economy and it’s budget.
Governor Crist said today that he would be open to the possibility.
Florida TaxWatch today also called for a special session. TaxWatch says the state needs to clarify the corporate income tax law in order to avoid further harm to Florida’s economy.
A report from TaxWatch warns that the way state revenue officials interpret the current corporate income tax law could have some severe and unintended consequences, including further job losses.
