Busiest Mailing Day of the Year

Time is running out to ship gifts to loved ones across the country.  With only 10 days until Christmas, December 15th is the busiest mailing day of the year.  The holiday rush is apparent at any Post Office, where lines, letters, and packages are piling up.

“I’m shipping some goodies back to Rhode Island,” said James Martin while waiting in line.

“I’m buying stamps to send Canada’s notes back home,” said Ruth Townsend.  No matter where the destination, it’s workers like Dee Carr, a postal clerk, who are responsible for getting them there on time.

“It’ll be another 12 to 13 hour day for us,” he said, “Some of us have been here since 4:30 this morning.”  Carr worked 64 hours last week and this week he expects to be even busier.

Postmaster Steve Kirkland says they are shipping 3 to 4 times their normal amount, about 150 thousand letters and boxes in one day.  He says it can be a challenge.

“Yesterday we had people to prepare the packages so they could be delivered on time this morning and this afternoon,” said Kirkland, “Weather, with mail coming from other parts of the country it can affect us, also just the sheer amount versus what we normally get.”

It can also be a challenge for anyone trying to get gifts on their way.  Kirkland says his best advice is to plan ahead.

“make sure you use peanuts and use extra padding because things get jostled around a lot… and the earlier the better,” he said, “We want to get every piece delivered by Santa on time.”

Kirkland says the best times to go to the post office are around 10a.m and 2pm.
