Jackson County, Fla:
It’s possibly one of the highest civil verdicts handed down in Jackson County. Friday a jury awarded a car crash victim more than $4 million.
Julie Keyes, 65, was involved in a single-car accident in December of 2006 on Tendell Road just a half-mile from her Cottondale home. Her attorney, Larry Perry, says Mrs. Keyes was run off the road by another driver. Keyes over corrected and her car flipped upside down.
She was life flighted to Flowers Hospital in Dothan and suffered from a bruised spinal cord and a hangman’s fracture. After spending time at Flowers, Keyes was sent to a rehabilitation facility in Tallahassee. Following her stay there she was sent to another hospital in Alabama for surgery.
Today, Keyes has difficulty controlling her arms and legs. She is also unable to walk without a wheelchair or assistance from someone else.
The driver of the other vehicle was never found. Perry says because of that Keyes’ should have been covered by her uninsured motorists policy from her insurance company, American International Insurance. He says the American International told her they would provide coverage during the first week after the accident but they never did.
After a week-long trial and two hours of deliberation the jury sided with Keyes and her husband, Bob. Out of the more than $4 million award, $3.4 million went towards past economic harms and losses and past and future medical bills. The remainder was for physical pain, suffering and disfigurement.
Until the accident, Keyes was the caregiver for her husband who lost his leg after a car accident back in 1974. She also worked full-time at the Florida state Welcome Center at the Florida-Alabama line in Jackson County.

After 3 years of suffering and waiting for some type of relief it seems very little in comparison to what she and her family had to endure. My prayers go out for her and her family. I will also review my own insurance policy. A lot of insurance agents don’t take the time to explain how “uninsured motorist protection” really works. Apparently it is a protection you really shouldn’t exclude.
