A pregnant 18 year old woman is found dead in her apartment. Marianna Police say Tamika Fletcher died from complications of diabetes. The woman’s father now warns others about this silent killer.
“It’s devastating.”
Frank Brown Jr. is now living with the death of his daughter and his unborn grandson.
“It just blinded me. I was hoping someone was playing a joke with me.”
Tameka was 5-6 months pregnant when she died. She was found in her bedroom last week. Preliminary medical reports say she Suffered complications from type 1 diabetes.
“All Tamika’s life we were concerned about her diabetes,” Brown said. “We were always warning her about taking her insulin.”
Brown says Tamika has struggled with the disease for eight years. One year ago she gave birth to a girl and named her miracle.
“Course it was a miracle because the doctors said if she ever got pregnant she could die.”
This time was different. Brown says Tamika ignored the warning signs.
“My niece called me and told me Tamika was sick and spit up some blood the day before. I told her to call 911 and go to the emergency room. Tamika said no.”
Tamika was found dead four days later. Her blood sugar was reportedly off the charts. A normal blood-sugar level is reportedly between 80 and 150. Tamika’s was reportedly between 1,000 and 2,000.
“We hope that by Tamika’s passing that this will be a warning to other kids with diabetes to monitor their sugar, because diabetes is a silent killer. It can strike anytime any moment any minute.”
Tamika Fletcher’s funeral will be this Saturday in Marianna at the Pope Chapel AME Church. Services begin at 1p.m.
