Panama City, Fla:
Many of us will be spending time outdoors as the July 4th holiday weekend approaches. A fun 4th of July weekend can be ruined by a bad sunburn. Doctors say it’s important to always use sunscreen to protect your skin from cancer. You’ll want to pay close attention to the sunscreen’s SPF.
SPF is sun protection factor. Dermatologists recommend using an SPF of at least 15. An SPF of 15 means it takes 15 times longer for you to burn than if you had not used sunscreen. Dermatologist Dr. Jon Ward says SPF lab studies are based on using a golf ball size amount of sunscreen. He says most people don’t actually use that amount.
“So most people are putting about a fourth of that which would mean your real sun protection factor is probably around 4 from a 15 [SPF]. I think it’s great that they’ve come up with these sun protection factors of 30, 60, 90…” Dr. Ward explains.
Dr. Ward also recommends a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and reapplying every time you get out of the water even if you are using water proof or water resistant sunscreen.
