The cold weather did not keep Bay County residents from turning out for this year’s Jaycees Christmas parade. Locals lined the streets in blankets, coats and hats to see the lights and hear the sounds of a Panama City Christmas. The floats in this year’s parade varied in scope and style, but everyone worked hard to display their own interpretation of this year’s theme: “Christmas around the World.”
Brenda Nolind describes the labor that yields this year’s float for the Jaycees annual Christmas parade: “I drew out the plans and how we wanted it to look and then everyone pitched in and started donating and giving the stuff to make it happen.”
…stuff like lights, paper, and big bold letters to put on the side. Brenda says that the brunt of the work was accomplished prior to Saturday’s parade, but Saturday afternoon finishing touches made the float light a beacon in the cold night.
Today we had to come down and put all the lights on. The children all made ornaments and flags of all the different nations to attach to the sides. Some organizations took a different approach.
Wendy Locke with the Lynn Haven Raider Cheerleaders says that “Our float is basically just lit up and pretty with all our little girls on it.”
Wendy says that this year they wanted to feature their award-winning cheerleading squad and keep the decorations and labor to a minimum: “We just put the lights on and we strung up a Christmas tree and we had some PVC candy canes that we made and that’s really about it.”
Low maintenance or high maintenance, by 4 and 5 o’clock everyone was chilled and ready for the parade to start, but when the time came to get ready, they all remember the whole point is to wish Panama City and Bay County a Merry Christmas.
