Panama City, Fla:
This year, Panama City is celebrating its 100th anniversary. To mark that event, civic organizations led by Mayor Scott Clemons are inviting the community to look at how best the city can promote growth in the next 100 years.
Citizens and organizations of Panama City have developed 3 different approaches for improving the community:
1. Increase the city’s attractions and attractiveness
2. Stimulate economic growth
3. Preserve and protect Panama City’s natural beauty and community character
In the last 2 weeks, News 13 has taken a closer look at Approach 1 and Approach 2.
Approach 3 aims to protect and better utilize Panama City’s natural resources. It would do that by developing land use projects that increase the city’s natural beauty, redeveloping existing neighborhoods and increasing public access to St. Andrews Bay – which is known as the city’s original resource.
“As a fishing community many years ago and looking back at our history,” says Lynn Cherry, Project Coordinator, “The St. Andrews Bay is what brought our population to us, and then our shipping industry.”
“St. Andrews Bay and what it offers the city is one of the most attractive charming ways that we can develop the community,” explains Janice Lucas, Project Director.
Along with protecting the bay, Approach 3 would focus on improving environmental aspects of the city to enhance a family-friendly atmosphere.
The public will be able to decide on which approach or combination of approaches to take in the Centennial Conversations Forum Tuesday, February 17th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Bay County Library.
Organizers say they don’t expect citizens at the forum to choose just one approach. Instead, they say a fourth plan will probably emerge.
