Bay County, Fla:
A possible conflict of interest in the federal cocaine conspiracy case involving Dr. Michael reed is being looked into.
According to federal court documents, in two phone conversations from the Jackson County Jail Reed states that he is paying attorney fees for his girlfriend and co-defendant in the case, Amy Cooper. Cooper is represented by James White.
The prosecution is asking the court to hold a Garcia hearing to figure out if there is a conflict of interest. If a conflict is determined, Cooper and Reed can waive it it they choose.
If not, this will be the second time Cooper will have to change attorneys due to a conflict of interest. She was originally represented by Jim Appleman before a conflict was determined because another attorney in Appleman’s office was representing a co-defendant in the case.
Cooper is set to go to trial November 16th. Sentencing for Reed is scheduled for November 10th.
