A former Holmes County man is in Federal Custody thanks to a tip that came into Crimes Stoppers of Holmes County.
John Steven Carter (56) was a resident of Holmes County for several years but in 2005 his freedom was jeopardized when Investigators from the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department and FDLE served a search warrant at Carter’s Westville residence.
Investigators discovered a sophisticated indoor marijuana growing operation set up inside a hidden room. Carter was arrested at that time on drug and gun charges but later bonded out of jail. Carter failed to show up for his court date and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
However being a fugitive didn’t stop Carter’s criminal activity. He fled to Virginia, changed his name and set up another indoor marijuana growing operation.
Carter lead a low profile life until four young men tried to break into his New Kent, Virginia home to steal marijuana and one of them was killed. Carter then apparently fled Virginia and subsequently moved to Geneva County Alabama.
As a result of a tip that came into Crime Stoppers of Holmes County, Law Enforcement Officers converged on a Geneva residence at 2:00 a.m. where Carter had reportedly been living. However he had fled across the street to a vacant mobile home which Officers quickly surrounded. Once he realized there was no escape, Carter called 911 and told the operator “please don’t kill me, I’m unarmed”.
Carter was then taken into custody without any further incident. According to Lt. Ricky Morgan of Geneva Police Department, Carter’s first statement was “I’m going to die in prison”. Local Law Enforcement officers are relieved to have Carter back in custody and available to stand trial in Holmes County as well as Virginia.
The person who provided the information to Crime Stoppers of Holmes County which lead to Carter’s capture has remained anonymous and has received a cash reward of one thousand dollars.
When someone makes a call to Crime Stoppers they are given a number consisting of several digits. If the information they provide leads to an arrests they must have this number to collect their cash reward. The amount of the cash reward is based on the severity of the crime and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Anyone with information concerning any criminal activity is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers of Holmes County at 1-866-689-8477.
