DeFuniak Springs Man Arrested on Theft of Firearms

On Monday, February 8th, the DeFuniak Springs Police arrested Philip Anthony Morgan, of Freeport. Morgan’s arrest culminated in the closing of three existing theft charges of various businesses in the surrounding area, to include Wal-Mart, Po Boys Guns and Ammo and Copeland’s Gun Shop.

On Saturday, February 6th Po Boys Guns and Ammo reported 2 firearms stolen from their establishment and describing an individual matching Philip Anthony Morgan. Then on Sunday, February 7th, the same individual was caught by the Super Wal-Mart employees exiting the store with numerous items that he had not paid for.

Philip Morgan was taken into custody and transported to the DeFuniak Springs Police for a formal interview.

During the interview, it was revealed that there were possibly more stolen items than what was returned Sunday evening. DeFuniak Springs Police received verbal permission to retrieve any possible stolen items from his friend’s residence. DeFuniak Springs Police received several items that were being stored for Philip Anonthy Morgan.

The items recovered were a total of five weapons, four of which were found to be stolen from Po Boys Gun and Ammo along with one rifle scope for a total value of $2,260.00; also several rifle scopes, ammunition and hunting apparel valued at $800.00 stolen from Wal-Mart in DeFuniak Springs; and several rifle scopes, ammunition, and hunting apparel valued at $800.00 which were stolen from Copeland’s Gun Shop in Freeport.

Philip Morgan was arrested and transported to the Walton County jail, where he was booked on 2 counts of Grand Theft and 4 counts of Theft of Firearms. Further charges may be pending, as the Walton County Sheriff’s Office investigates the charges that fall outside of DFSP jurisdiction.
