A dog will soon make a 300 mile trip home after being gone for more than a year and a half.

Bay County Animal Control responded to a report on Wednesday of a stray dog in Springfield. Officials picked up the dog and scanned him for a microchip.

The chip was registered to Amanda Wells in Metairie, La. a town more than 300 miles from Panama City.

Turns out Bear, a five-year-old terrier mix, was let outside his home back in December 2007 and had not been seen since.

The Humane Society of Louisiana volunteered to bring Bear home, but Wells preferred to pick him up herself.

The Bay County Animal Control Division Manager, Jim Crosby, said microchipping can cost as little as $10 and is the best way to keep track of your pet.

Bay County Animal Control offers microchips, for more information contact them at 767-3333.
