There are new developments in the federal drug case against Dr. Michael Reed.
Reed, a Panama City surgeon, was arrested last month for the possession of cocaine. The doctor, and six other co-defendants face a 32-count indictment. Today, they went to federal court.
In a room full of people, Dr. Reed pled “not guilty” to all charges. Reed sat as free man, in a suit and tie. His five co-defendants, charged with the same drug conspiracy offense, sat shackled in jumpsuits far away from the public. Some of their family members came to show support.
Dr. Reed did not show up with his family today, he came into court with his lawyer and a friend. Inside the courtroom, Reed looked calm and collected as he requested a trial by jury. He was in the courtroom only briefly.
Reed’s co-defendants, also pled not guilty and requested the same thing. The charges against them are part of a three year investigation with the help of confidential sources, wiretaps and undercover agents.
A few days ago, we learned how feds say that one of drug deals went down. The government claims they caught a defendant in an attempt to disguise cocaine in a box of laundry detergent. That box of cocaine, was supposedly intended for Dr. Reed.
Dr. Reed left the court the same way he came in, as a free man. His lawyer issued a statement on his behalf that says, “[Dr. Reed] prays the community will stand behind him during this difficult time. His priorities are to continue to meet the medical needs and care of his patients…”
Dr. Reed is allowed to practice medicine. He’s done so, since the day after his arrest.
Reed’s trial date is set for August 17th, and that is the same date his co-defendants will begin the trial by jury process.
Codefendant, Rob Lee Young, was also released from federal imprisonment.
