In Bay County, Hurricane Gustav hurls strong waves towards shore, washing up Panama City Beaches.
Beach erosion is already a problem in front of public beach access number two, near St. Andrews State Park. The sand is packed up and buried the beach access steps. A few feet from there is a 3 foot drop, where the tide stops. The pipe that leads to a cement outfall which regulates storm water, is exposed.
The water level is also rising in the bay at Carl Gray Park behind Gulf Coast Community College. Palm trees are left standing in about a foot of water. Just beyond that, the boat ramp is completely submerged.
Double red flags are flying on Panama City Beaches, meaning the waters are closed. Rescue workers will not enter the Gulf to rescue distressed swimmers.
Walton County beaches are closed Monday due to high surf hitting the shore and rip currents.
