It’s twelve words that inspire students across the country and here in our area, “Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to share.” This is the motto of the FAA.
Today, a team of twelve students and volunteers drove an hour and a half to the Panama City Rescue Mission to serve food to those less fortunate.
Trevor Williams is a Florida FFA State Officer. He joined the students from Sneads High School in Jackson County to serve lunch at the Panama City Rescue Mission Friday.
Williams says, “Bay County and Calhoun County where I’m from, all the counties have given so much. I mean, everything they’re done for my family, my friends, it’s just great to give back for everything they’ve done.”
Each February marks national FFA week in which students reach out to the community in an effort to give back.
Sydney Stone, the Sneads FFA President says, “For me, it means we’re actually putting this into play, that we’ve serving others and it’s making me feel better that knowing I’m helping someone today.”
The students aren’t the only ones feeling special. Guests at the mission say any time volunteers spend time with them is great.
Mission Guest Niya Reynolds says, “I love any group that will come in here and that takes out the time with the folks and they really need it. But for the young generation it really inspires me because you have some out there that still need leadership and help and you can get some young teenagers out here to help and to do something with us and bring much joy to my life.”
Rescue Mission Executive Director, Rev. Billy Fox tells us, “It’s really wonderful they’d take a long trip down here and bring all these young people down to give us a hand. It’s really neat to have volunteers especially young people who realize they may have a little more privileged than they think when they have to deal with folks who don’t have as much.”
Rev. Fox says each day, the Rescue Mission serves between 125 and 200 meals at lunch time. If you would like to volunteer to provide, prepare, or serve food, just call the volunteer coordinator at the Panama City Rescue Mission. That number is 769-0783.
