A Texas businessman has proposed a sweeping energy reform plan, using different energy sources to reduce America’s dependency on oil.
T. Boone Pickens, a former oil and gas executive, says his solution to soaring oil prices is promoting natural gas as a short-term alternative and using wind energy in the long-term.
“What I propose to do is to get natural gas into the equation as a transportation fuel,” Pickens told members of the media on Tuesday in Houston.
Pickens says by using wind energy to power our homes, it’ll free up natural gas supplies for use in planes, trains, cars and trucks. That in turn would reduce our dependency on foreign oil.
Honda’s Civic GX runs on compressed natural gas. The $25,000 car gets an average 28 miles per gallon and is currently sold only in New York and California.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the price of natural gas was around $2 in April, compared to the national average of $4.11/gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.
Drivers seem ready to embrace any relief from high gas prices.
“Anything under $4 sounds good, especially for Panama City. So, yeah, I like that a lot,” says Quondron Hill.
“Being retired, on a fixed income, you know, I have to stop eating so much steaks, and go back to eating hotdogs and hamburgers, just to put gas in my car,” says Bay County resident Joe Williams.
