The Panama City Rescue Mission has always been a place for people to go when they need food and shelter. But in today’s struggling job market, more people are relying on the rescue mission for its services.
A recent survey among American Rescue Missions shows that more and more people turn to missions for food and shelter. But in these tough economic times, the shelter also suffers from a lack of donations.
One of the largest jumps is the increase in single women with children who make up 67% of families served at the rescue mission. There’s also been a rise in the number of veterans served. They make up 34%.
Rev. Billy Fox says, “Well, ya, we are adjusting daily. We don’t know what to do. Were having more and more people show up and whatever we can do in the day.”
On a typical weekend, the rescue mission serves an average of three to four-hundred meals. But this thanksgiving weekend, they’re expecting to serve 3,000. And with that number, comes a lot of first time homeless.
