Tallahassee, Fla:

Gov. Charlie Crist’s proposal to make Florida a little greener and reduce greenhouse gas emissions gets a green light from the Florida Environmental Regulation Commission.

The commission voted 6 to 1 in favor of the plan Tuesday.  The California-style auto emission standards are considered the toughest in the nation.  However, the measure still needs approval from state lawmakers.  The stricter standards would apply only to new vehicles sold in Florida.  The plan prohibits car manufacturers from delivering vehicles to Florida for sale, lease or rent unless they meet the California emission standards.

Supporters say the proposal is good for the environment and good for consumers because it will mandate vehicles that use less fuel and are cheaper to operate. They call it another step toward improving the energy security of Florida and the nation.

Auto manufacturers and dealers oppose the California standards.  They argue it will increase the cost of vehicles and could limit the availability of certain models, especially light trucks and many SUV’s.

The man in charge of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection flatly rejects that argument.  Michael Sole says there’s no evidence certain vehicles will be harder to get in Florida as a result of the plan.

Ted Smith of the Florida Automobile Dealers Association says the plan won’t be good for consumers.  He contends vehicles will cost more and consumers will have a harder time getting the model they want.

A state analyst concedes the new emission standards may boost the price of vehicles, but says they’ll be cheaper to operate.

It is nice to know we (the state of Florida) will be modeling ourselfs after one of the most screwrd up states. As for pollution if you as governor would do away with DEP you could save on amount of pollutants since their cars and trucks would be parked and our tax base would increase for people could go back to work in the jobs DEP and their ideas have done away with.

I have to agree modeling anything after California, other than public transportation is a disaster.  What is worse though is the environmental push we are seeing.  it is great that we can come up with new technologies, but good luck seeing it get anywhere.  The environmentalists are already screaming that solar power takes up to much land and scars the land it uses, wind power farms will kill birds and are eyesores and hyrdropower is destroying our fish.  I would say let us shut power plants down to make them happy, but then we would have to cut down trees for firewood and use coal for heating.  I would love to see their faces are we pump even more carbon into the atmosphere.  Envriomental harbingers crawl back to the forests and the caves and leave the rest of us alone. As for being for pollution, no i have a hybrid, use mercury filled CFL’s and recycle, so kiss my jolly green a55.
