Tallahassee, Fla:
It’s another sign of the economic times we live in.
Parents nationwide are telling day care providers they must scale back on the number of days that their children can attend, or stop going altogether.
Financial strains are prompting more families to keep kids at home with grandparents or even force one spouse to quit a job because gas, food and child care expenses have outpaced their income.
Child care providers that have had waiting lists for as long as anyone can remember now find themselves scrambling for children.
Many daycares are for the first time offering part-time services or changing hours to accommodate the growing number of parents working off shifts, or struggling to make ends meet.
It’s a trend that Linda Alexionok of the Children’s Campaign is seeing in Florida.
The group is a strong supporter of pre-K and early childhood learning programs, so Alexionok says the trend comes with a lot of negative consequences because so much of a child’s brain development happens early in life.
Alexionok points out that politicians moved quickly to bail out Wall Street, but she says in tough times, they should remember that child care is at the heart of Main Street.
The state of Florida finds itself about two billion dollars short this year due to declining tax collections, but the Children’s Campaign is working to prevent cuts to pre-K programs.
Alexionok says she hopes the new leadership in the state Legislature will make new choices that place more emphasis on early learning.
