Tallahassee, Fla:
Florida has hit the million mark when it comes to early voting and state election officials say that number could be even greater if you factor in absentee ballots.
As of 5 a.m. Monday, the Secretary of State’s office says 1,016,275 people had cast a ballot in early voting which began last Monday.
A spokeswoman for the office says in past elections, the number of people who take part in early voting usually parallels the number of people who vote absentee. That means the number of people who have voted actually could be closer to two million.
Miami-Dade officials say the county is well on its way to record voter turnout. So far, 112,000 people have cast ballots in the county and 92,104 absentee ballots have been returned.
In comparison, during the 2004 presidential election, 244,067 voters took advantage of two weeks of early voting and 98,466 voted by mail.
Early voting continues in Florida through next weekend. Polling places in some counties are open on Saturday only, while others have Sunday hours. Election Day is November 4th.
