State and federal teacher organizations are hoping that any economic stimulus package that comes out of Washington will include money for education.

The heads of the American Federation of Teachers and the Florida Education Association met today with Gov. Charlie Crist.

They discussed funding of education in Florida and the federal stimulus package.

The meeting came the day lawmakers are scheduled to give final approval to a plan to fill the $2.3 billion dollar hole in the state budget. The includes $466 million in cuts to kindergarten-12th grade education, which is more than the $370 million in cuts proposed by the governor.

The teacher leaders say those cuts make it even more crucial that stimulus money be made available to education.

The teachers did received some good news today from Gov. Crist.

Crist says his budget officials have already started to take a closer look at the budget plan and that one of the potential veto targets is a provision that would cut bonuses to teachers who earn national board certification by $11 million. It would cut the bonuses from 10 percent to 8 percent of average teacher pay.
