Tallahassee, Fla:
A big change is coming to the Florida Lottery this weekend.
Florida is joining Powerball.
Tickets for the multi-state lottery game Powerball go on sale Sunday morning.
Florida is the 30th state, along with the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that participate in Powerball.
To play the game, a player has to pick five numbers - from one to 59. They also have to pick a Powerball number - from one to 39. You win the jackpot if you pick all six numbers correctly.
Florida took a look at joining Powerball twice before - in 1999 and again in 2005 - but there was concern that doing so would hurt ticket sales for existing Florida games. But ticket sales for the Florida games have started to flatten and in July the Florida Lottery agreed to join in Powerball.
With Florida joining the game, the Powerball jackpot is guaranteed to start out at $20 million dollars.
State lottery retailers will start selling tickets for the game at 6 a.m. Sunday for next Wednesday night’s drawing. The current Powerball jackpot is $90 million dollars with the next drawing set for Saturday night.
