State emergency management officials in Tallahassee continue to monitor the wildfires burning in the central part of the state.

Efforts to contain the fires that have burned about 15 square miles were improving, officials said. Still, major highways in the area were being intermittently closed because of smoke and the proximity of the flames.

State emergency officials say they are trying to rotate crews to keep firefighters fresh.

A spokesman at the state’s Emergency Operations Center urges Floridians to use continue to use caution outdoors.

Since the fires began Sunday about 20 homes have been destroyed and 160 other structures damaged. Palm Bay city officials say the damage in that community is estimated at approximately $3.5 million. Homes and outbuildings were among the damaged structures.

Officials had earlier reported 40 homes destroyed.
