Bay County, Fla:
“At this point I’m just looking for work.” McHenry Littleton has been without a job for two months too long.
“I’ve lost everything. It’s devastating. I’ve lost my car my dog, the utilities are off. I’m about to lose the place where I’m staying.”
Littleton like 3700 other people use the Gulf Coast Workforce Center in hopes of finding their future employer. Littleton has applied for nearly 100 jobs, but the result is always the same.
“I get cards back from people, denials of course. Not needing anyone at this time or somebody is better qualified or something.”
As a former machinist from Eastern Shipbuilding, the competition only gets tougher. The Smurfit-Stone Container Company is shutting down until January.
It will release 425 employees later this week.
“We are assisting them on information on how to apply for unemployment benefits,” says Workforce Employee Representative Sue Senkle
Senkle says unemployment in Bay County is one percent lower than the state average. The number of people in the market for jobs typically increases this time of year.
“People who don’t normally work are looking for a little extra income during Christmas time. So that also inflates the job seekers.”
The Work Force Center website is a one stop shop. It pulls in job listings from corporate, government, and educational sites and has more than 500 job listings.
“It’s still a very diverse section of jobs out there. I’m seeing administration assistant positions, welder positions, engineer positions retail management…”
And the list goes on for job hunters. McHenry Littleton will keep searching every day, knowing the perfect job could be at his fingertips.
“I’m going to keep my head up and my hopes high. I’ll keep trying. If anybody needs somebody to work let me know.
“Most of the people who come here are like me. They come here every day.”
