The parents of a slain Jackson County Deputy speak out about a deal give assets to the family of another victim.  Madeline Altman heart still burns almost two years after her son’s murder.

“I feel anger towards the Sheriff.”

Jackson County authorities say Lionel Sands and Daniel Brown shot and killed Sheriff McDaniels wife Mellie in her driveway.  When Deputy Altman arrived on the scene he too was gunned down.

“He was the hero in the whole incident as far as I’m concerned,” Madeline said.

Hero or not, it’s Sheriff McDaniel who received property and retirement assets last May.  According to the Jackson County Floridan, gunman Lionel Sands in-laws gave McDaniel 120 acres of Jackson County land and retirement assets of unknown value.  Altman’s family got nothing.

“It seems like there’s been more emphasis put on the Sheriff’s wife, feeling sorry for McDaniel more than feeling sorry for us.  We lost a child in this.”

The property and retirement assets belonged to gunman Lionel Sands and his late wife Gail.  At the time, Lionel was a suspect in his own wife’s death.  But Lionel died before the case could be solved.  Gail’s family reportedly relinquished the couple’s assets to prevent a wrongful death lawsuit.

“I don’t think the Sheriff should’ve had it and I don’t think we should have it.  I think Gail Sands parents deserved it.  They lost a child just like we did.”

Altman’s parents are disabled and say they’re not asking for money.  If they were to receive anything, however, they’d use the money for routine maintenance around the house.

The Altmans say they do not plan to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sands family.  News 13 was unable to reach John McDaniel for a comment.
