FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD OPERATIONS WEEKLY REPORT
December 4 - 10, 2009
This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.
NORTHWEST REGION
ESCAMBIA COUNTY
As Lt. Brian Lambert entered the Escambia River Wildlife Management Area, he noticed a car backed into the woods.  As he approached, the driver partially rolled the vehicle window down.  Lieutenant Lambert immediately smelled a strong chemical odor coming from the vehicle.  The driver admitted to smoking crack cocaine.  Additional drug paraphernalia and crack cocaine was located in the vehicle.  The driver was also found in possession of Xanax without a prescription.  Lieutenant Lambert seized the evidence, arrested and transported the individual to the Escambia County Jail.
SANTA ROSA COUNTY
Officer Royce Johnson and several other officers responded to a night hunting complaint in the Munson area.  The complainant heard three shots fired behind his home and observed a truck parked at the corner of the field.  He followed the truck to a residence where a subject known to him exited the truck and apologized for shooting there.  The responding officers found a dead doe deer in the field.  The suspect was interviewed and charges are pending against the suspect for taking deer at night with a gun and light.
Lt. Dan Hahr was on patrol near the Milton area when he observed three subjects standing on the shoulder of a public road.  As he approached, he observed one of them carrying a shotgun.  The subjects admitted to trying to kill a deer and were waiting for one to come out in front of them.  After interviews, one subject was issued a notice to appear for attempting to take deer with a firearm during crossbow season and attempting to take deer from a public road right of way.
Officers David Jernigan and Joe Murphy received an anonymous complaint that several individuals had killed a deer and were cleaning it behind a house.  The officers arrived at the residence and saw a shed in the back of the property with a light on, along with several shadows moving around inside.  One of the individuals stepped out of the shed, then ducked back inside.  The light went out and several individuals quickly exited the shed.  The officers rounded up the individuals and returned to the shed.  They found one doe deer on the floor and one more already dressed and cut up.  After interviews, one suspect admitted to shooting both deer and two other suspects admitted to helping track and load the deer into a vehicle and later transport it to another vehicle before bringing the deer to the shed.  The officers also found two untagged alligator hides in the shed.  The subject who admitted to shooting the deer told officers that an FWC nuisance alligator trapper had given him the skins earlier in the summer.  After a call was made to the nuisance trapper, the subject’s story changed and he admitted that the hides were given to him by someone else.  That subject was given a notice to appear citation for taking deer out of season and possession of untagged alligator parts.  Two other subjects were issued notices to appear for possession of antlerless deer out of season.  The alligator parts, a Remington model 700, and the deer meat was seized.
SANTA ROSA COUNTY COPS
On December 4-6, FWC officers assigned to Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties participated in the second annual Blackwater Family Hunt.  Officers Steve Hoomes and Danny Arnette provided a review of safety concerns and hunt rules during a safety meeting conducted on the first evening.  Approximately 20 youths participated during the weekend hunt, harvesting 11 deer.  For several of the youths it was their first harvested deer.
OKALOOSA COUNTY
Officer Andy Maltais was on patrol in Destin at approximately 8:30 p.m. when he pulled into Destin Marina to check some men fishing from the docks.  One subject was in possession of a 37‑inch red drum.  The fish was seized and the subject was issued a citation for possession of oversize red drum.
WALTON COUNTY
In October, three subjects were charged for taking deer at night with a gun and light.  The subjects recently attended court and were each sentenced a $785 fine, 12 months probation, and one year suspension of hunting privileges.  The firearm used was also forfeited.
