Veterans eligible for the post 9-11 GI Bill are finding new ways to use it this semester.
Instead of using it themselves, veterans are giving the benefits to their spouses and children. Veteran affairs advisers at Gulf Coast Community College are seeing an influx of family enrollment this semester.
The post 9-11 GI Bill allows spouses and children of eligible veterans to get up to thirty-six months of education benefits. The program covers costs including tuition, housing, and books and supplies.
Advisers say the toughest challenge is dealing with family members who don’t know anything about the new program.
“I’m dealing with spouses who don’t know all the acronyms of the military,” Veteran Certified Official Anthony Cobb said. “I’m dealing with dependents, the children who don’t know anything about the military. So, I have to learn a little bit more on my side as far as what I need to learn. In turn, I can help the general public a little bit better.”
This is the second semester the post 9-11 GI Bill is in effect. Classes at Gulf Community College resume January 7th.
