Librarians take down the “quiet sign” at the Bay County Library, as young adults rock out to their favorite tunes.
The library’s Youth Adult Department held a “Guitar Hero” contest in a special meeting room Sunday. The tournament was facilitated by the Panama City Play and Trade video game store.
The Guitar Hero video game simulates playing a real guitar, but substitutes buttons for strings. More than 25 kids aged 12-18 jammed out. First prize was a $25 gift certificate to Play and Trade, $10 for second and a t-shirt for third.
“Children enjoy video games right now,” says Children Services Director Sandra Pierce. “We’re trying to use that as a vehicle to get them into the library, get them interested in what we’re doing. We also carry gaming magazines and that’s a form of reading. We just want to do things that children in this town really enjoy and that’s one of them.”
The library also hopes to get teens involved in its Teen Book Club, Ages 12-17 are welcome. The Book Club meets Tuesday at 6 o’clock at the Bay County Library on 11th Street.
