High fuel prices and budget constraints are hitting many small governments hard. One Panhandle county is shifting to a 4-day work week as a cost-cutting measure.
Gulf County leaders are starting to shift county workers to a shortened work week.
Commissioners decided to make the change last month. Currently public works, mosquito control, roads, and maintenance have made the switch.
Commissioner Bill Williams says the price of fuel was the driving factor behind the change.
“What we’re trying to do is mainstream our operations, consolidate our workdays, and then more organization patterns within our actual job sites,” says Williams.
“I haven’t found anybody that’s really not in favor of it. I drive down from Wewa. I only have to drive down four days a week. There are other people that drive even further than that,” says Joe Danford, Gulf County’s Director of Public Works and Mosquito Control.
County leaders had also want to close the courthouse for one day a week, but were told that wouldn’t be possible unless the other five counties in the 14th judicial circuit agreed.
Though the courts are a no-go, Williams says they’re asking some of the constitutional officers to examine the 4-day work week too.
Officials say rising fuel costs have caused public works and mosquito control to go over their fuel budgets.
As part of the cost-saving measures, Gulf County’s landfill is now closed on Fridays.
