Stephen Gunter - bio

With the college football season winding down, I figured I would throw out my picks for this year’s Heisman Trophy race. Feel free to let me know who you have as your Heisman hopeful at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

1- Toby Gerhart RB (Stanford)
It is impossible to ignore the season this guy is having for Stanford. He is the center figure in the offense. Gerhart has rushed for 1,531 yards this season and 23 touchdowns (leads the nation). He averages 5.4 yards-per-carry. Take a look at what he has done the last three games against the PAC 10’s top teams.

    Oregon- 223 yds./ 3 tds
    USC- 178 yds./ 3 tds
    Cal- 136 yds./ 4 tds

That’s hard to ignore. This guy is a BEAST.

2- Mark Ingram RB (Alabama)
Gets the number two spot because of his team being unbeaten (Iron Bowl still looming). His stats might not compare to some other guys on the list, but he is a strong candidate anyways. Ingram has rushed for 1,399 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yds-per-carry. He has seven games of over 100 yards rushing. His 246 yards against South Carolina is pretty impressive. Don’t forget this guy rushed for 150 against Virginia Tech and 144 against LSU. Bama might not be undefeated if it wasn’t for this guy.

3- Kellen Moore QB (Boise St.)
Undefeated Boise St. can thank this gun slinger for the perfect season so far. 2,791 passing yards, 33 touchdowns to only three interceptions. Let me repeat that 3 INTERCEPTIONS. He is completing 66% of his passes and he currently leads the nation in passing efficiency.

4- Colt McCoy QB (Texas)
Undefeated team, accurate passer and a good leader. 3,024 yards passing, 73% completions percentage and has over four games with 300 yards passing. His numbers aren’t as good as some other quarterbacks, but his team’s record probably plays a factor.

5- Case Keenum QB (Houston)
I’m still a little saddened Colt Brennan never won a Heisman Trophy (Brennan was the best college QB I have ever seen). This guy is the 2009 version of Brennan. Leads the nation in passing (4,599). Leads the nation in TD passes (36). Completing 70% of his passes. He has three games of over 500 yards passing. This guy is no David Klingler.

Notables:
Tim Tebow QB (Florida)- Stats are down from years past, but his team’s records will keep him in the race.

Jimmy Clausen QB (ND)- This guy is good. 3,382 yards passing, 23 touchdowns passes to only four interceptions.

Sleepers: Guys you should probably know

Freddie Barnes WR (Bowling Green)- Have you heard of this guy? Probably not, so let me tell you about him. Leads the nation in receptions (129). Leads the nation in receiving yards (1,482). Tied for the lead in TD receptions (14). Those stats good enough for you?

Colin Kaepernick QB (Nevada)-  Pistol, pistol, pistol. This guys runs the pistol offense to perfection. 1,734 yards passing and 16 touchdowns. 1,129 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns.

Roy Helu, Jr. RB (Nebraska)- I’m serious. If he puts up big numbers against Colorado (I expect he will), and then the Huskers manage to beat Texas in the Big 12 Championship game, his stock could rise. 1,057 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.

Levi Brown QB (Troy)- Being a Troy grad, I had to let you know about this guy. Second in the nation in passing yards (3,575). Has thrown for 19 touchdowns. Lead the Trojans to a fourth consecutive Sun Belt Title.
