Bay County, Fla:

Representatives at Clary-Glenn funeral home in DeFuniak Springs confirm that they are handling the arrangements for Megan Burkhart-Smith, a South Walton High School student that died as a result of a late Saturday night car crash.

South Walton High Principal Mark Ewing says Smith was a popular girl in the school of 580 students. Ewing says the School District and Superintendent have been very supportive of the Seahawk Community. A counseling triage will be set up in the Student Media Center today for support. Ewing says when something like this happens, “it’s a family event.”

Three 16 year old girls were taken to the hospital after crashing a 2005 Land Rover into a tree in Walton County. The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened around midnight Sunday.

FHP says Elyse Bushee of Miramar Beach was driving northbound on County Road 83-A toward Highway 20, when she missed the stop sign. She continued north across Highway 20 and collided with a tree.

Bushee was not wearing her seat belt. She was taken to Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in serious condition. Her passenger, 16 year old Meghan Burkhart-Smith of Freeport, was wearing her seat belt. Officials with the FHP tell News 13 that Smith was on life support at Sacred Heart Pensacola Hospital.

16 year old Brytney Nicole Olsen, of Freeport, was also reportedly in the car. FHP says Olsen was not wearing her seat belt, but escaped with minor injuries.

Troopers have not yet determined whether alcohol was a factor in this crash, but say charges are pending.

Keep the legal at 16 or is 15?.Anways keep it there and these things will happen. !8 tio enter the draft, 21 to drink, 15 or 16 to drive, now lets see, if a 16 yearold can drive, all his friends want a ride, then and only then does the party starts. OMG way to young to drive, and not mature enough either. Just my 3 cents worth

This is a senseless shame.  When will teenage driver’s take their lives seriously.  It’s not cool or popular to die so young.  My prayers and sympathies go out to the family she left behind.
