Blountstown, Fla:
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office goes on a wild goose chase after two men run from them after a burglary.
The Sheriff’s Office launched into a high speed chase for 40 miles all over the county around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday. It was all over a gun and a jar of change.
“It’s not something you think someone would just walk into your house and just tote off a bunch of change. Unfortunately I’m wrong,” said the victim, Sandra Osborne.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says Osborne’s cousin and his nephew stole her 11 year old son’s piggy bank and 9 mm pistol, but it was more than just change.
“It’s all silver and dollars and last time we checked it was somewhere around $3,000,” Osborne said.
The Sheriff’s Office says two men broke through a window of Osborne’s home in Blountstown. Neighbors say they saw the men take off through the woods. Their truck was parked about a fourth of a mile away.
“I’ve just seen them running through the woods…we was scared cause the kids be out here playing,” said neighbor, Cassandra Jones.
The Sheriff’s Office discovered David Schaffer, 38, driving away in a red, dodge pick-up truck. The speeds reached up to 100 mph and took 5 police officers to stop the car. They went through Scott’s Ferry, over to Kinard and back up to Clarksville. The driver ended up stopping at a dead end and ran on foot until caught. One sheriff’s car sustained minor damage. The truck had a gash on the side from hitting a road sign.
“We returned to the scene of the burglary picked up a scent trail with blood hounds and within an hour or so we discovered the second offender,” said Calhoun County Sheriff, David Tatum.
The second offender was Schaffer’s 17-year-old nephew, whose name has not been released.
Osborne says her son is still shaken up.
“He won’t even walk inside the house to get a drink by himself…I mean he’s that scared…he’s got 11 years in a house that’s always been safe and now it’s not,” said Osborne.
Osborne says the suspects had been to her house before and knew the change and gun were there. She also says her wedding ring was stolen. The police have not recovered it.

Mary Scott, the officers didn’t “literally” go on a wild goose chase unless they were actually chasing a wild goose. Watch that wording.
