Many kids ask for a pony for Christmas and this year. Thanks to one organization, two horses will not only make for very exciting Christmas presents, they’ll have a second chance at a home.
Red oak farms is rehabilitating and adopting out two rescued horses this Christmas.
These two horses, Sammy and Varsity, will begin training this week. They arrived this afternoon to Red Oak Farms. The trainer at Red Oak says that in essence horses are a lot like people, no matter what their background with some help they can bounce back and lead wonderful lives.
Sammy the quarter horse and varsity the Arabian mare take their first steps into a new home that for the next month will help prepare them for new lives.
That’s because these two horses among others at Red Oak Farms have been rescued from previously bad situations. Melanie Higdon runs a horse rescue in hidden springs. She says that she rescues horses from many different kinds of situations. Higdon rescued the Arabian mare varsity in May of 2008. Sammy came to her in different set of circumstances: “Her owner fell upon hard times. He went through a bankruptcy and was losing his land and he asked us if we could take his horses in before they started to fall into a severe state of malnutrition.”
Amy Pachucki, the owner of red oak farms, got the idea to train and adopt these horses out for Christmas: “We want to get these horses home for the holidays, wherever that home might be. So to be able to do that they have to get manners, be family friendly, you know and make sure we’ve got them all figured out so that they’re ready to go into a home that can be a lifelong, loving situation for them.”
The horses will go through training 5 days a week leading up to Christmas. Families receiving Sammy or Varsity will get a newly trained, rehabilitated, and highly loved horse.
If you’re interested in adopting either Varsity or Sammy visit the Florida Horse Rescue Link and fill out the adoption application.
