Bay County, Fla:

College spring breakers might have a harder time checking into town this season. That’s because hotels are tightening the rules.

The requirements will begin in about two weeks, just in time for the spring break rush.

“We require a deposit in advance for arrival, usually about 50 dollars per person,” Hilton Incorporated Marketing Manager Philip Colvin said. “Then we require payment in full at the time of check-in.

Colvin works with the Holiday Inn in Panama City Beach. He says they will also make students sign a code of conduct too. This draft outlines hotel policies. It also lets student guests know how much items in the room cost in case they break anything.

Other hotels like the Hampton Inn Pier Park require full payment upon check-in.  Some properties require deposits up to 500 dollars.  Some condo- style properties are eliminating student guests all together by saying you have to be 25 years old to check in this year.

Hampton Inn Pier Park Sales Manager Carla Spears says students calling to make reservations don’t always agree or understand the policies. Rules are so tight at some properties; they are having trouble making any reservations at all.  The Hampton Inn on Thomas Drive is thinking of other ways to keep the rules tight and allow a little slack too.

I’m glad they are finally putting a stop to the craziness. If more of today’s young people were made to be responsible for their behavior or lack therof then we will see a difference. It will also curb some of them using their student loans and grants to pay for this big party instead of using for education. For those who say they depend on spring break to make a living, how about getting more education in a field that does good such as nursing.

mamawof3, I would hope that, in getting rid of spring break and the animal acting kids that come with it they might just possibly bring in a better quality of people that would insure that everybody could enjoy the beaches and not have the problems that spring breakers bring with them. Many of them act like animals that escaped from a zoo somewhere and that’s not right. Sure, they need to let off a little steam and have fun but not at the expense of everyone else. I’m all for them going elsewhere permanently. Let Cancun deal with the mess they make if the beaches can clean up their act in the process.

I don’t think we need to do away with spring breakers all together for economy sake, but having these rules in place will hopefully help make them stop and think before doing something stupid. I used to work at one of the beach resorts, we had to drain the pool 3 times within two weeks to clean and sanitize it do to springbreakers, that’s a lot of cost to the resort, and stops others from enjoying their vacation, they threw chairs in the pool from their balconies, broken glasses and some very disgusting things as well that I won’t mention. All they are going to do is create higher rates and more rules for themselves.

I’m glad to see this happening. Maybe in time Spring Break will go away altogether. In the meantime, these businesses need to do something to pay for the damages these drunken, drugged out kids do every year.
