DeFuniak Springs, FL – Hurricane Ike is impacting Walton County’s shoreline with high surf.

13th Street and Wilson Street are closed in south Walton County due to flooding, and higher surf in Choctawhatchee Bay in Freeport has caused Jones Lane to flood.

“We don’t expect to see any major winds in our area as Hurricane Ike passes through the Gulf of Mexico,” says Ed Baltzley, Walton County’s Emergency Response Division Director, “and it’s unlikely that we will see any major rainfall.  However, residents should continue to monitor the storm’s impact along the beaches and bays and drive with caution on roads near the Gulf of Mexico, Choctawhatchee Bay and other major bodies of water.”

Double red flags are currently flying over Walton County’s beaches indicating that the waters are closed.  Emergency officials have also closed the beaches.  For updates on swimming conditions, log on to the South Walton Fire District’s website at www.swfd.org.
