One student was partially ejected as a fully loaded Gadsden County school bus plowed into the woods and crashed off County Road 269A near Chattahoochee Monday.

The driver and one other student were also critically injured. They and almost a dozen others were hospitalized, with two going to Jackson Hospital and the others taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Authorities say none of the injuries appeared life-threatening. Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Ken Ellis said it was not known what caused the driver to veer of the road. The accident occurred as the bus was heading north into Chattahoochee.

Lt. Ellis said the accident was likely due to the driver suffering a “health incident,” or distraction.

There were 41 students aboard the bus as it travelled from West Gadsden High School in Greensboro. Some students were able to break out windows and help others to safety after the bus crashed and struck a tree.

Several students were trapped for a time in the front and central sections of the bus.

One student was pinned under the driver, and had to be removed with the “jaws of life.”

Emergency and health care professionals mounted an all-out rescue effort, including Jackson County Fire Rescue.

Nurses were summoned from Apalachee Correctional Institution in Sneads to help sort out the injured at a makeshift triage center set up on the grounds of Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee.

The name of the driver was not released as of press time
