Two companies providing emergency response training specifically for the oil spill is under investigation by the Florida Attorney General’s Office.
The Attorney General’s Office received numerous complaints that the two companies - Able Body
Labor and Southern Cat, Inc. are saying one thing, but doing another.
According to the complaints, both companies advertised the training was free, but at the end of the training withheld the certificates.
In addition, trainees had to pay up to 450 dollars to receive their certification.
Nathan Brooks owns Southern Cat, Inc.; a sub contractor of BP doing clean-up work.
Brooks says his company never advertised free training and doesn’t charge for the certificates, unless the person quits or gets fired.
BP’s spokesperson Vani Rao spoke to BP’s primary contractors and they both admitted certificates were received within 15 days of completing the course.
She says if you go to training through BP and are hired by BP you shouldn’t have those problems.
Since the investigation began, Able Body Labor is cooperating with the Attorney General’s Office.
Southern Cat, Inc. was served with an investigative subpoena seeking documents.
The company says they believe they will be cleared in the investigation.
